Construction on two long-planned roundabouts in Pike Road will start Monday.
The roundabouts will be installed at the intersections of State Route 126 and U.S. Highway 80 and at Marler Road and U.S. Highway 80.
Action 8 News first reported on the roundabout plan in 2020. The next step in the project happened earlier this year. There is a third roundabout planned for the opposite side of Interstate 85 from Exit 16 but it is part of a separate phase.
The Alabama Department of Transportation says that roundabouts have proven to be effective in enhancing road safety and reducing traffic congestion. According to the Federal Highway Administration, roundabouts typically result in a 35% decrease in all crashes, a 76% reduction in injuries and a more than 90% decrease in fatalities.
On many weekday afternoons, traffic backs up onto Interstate 85 northbound at Exit 16 as drivers try to exit the interstate.
“The beginning of the construction phase of the SR-126 and US-80 roundabout project is great news for the Town of Pike Road as we move onward toward a future filled with opportunity,” Pike Road Mayor Gordon Stone said. “Projects of this type provide great momentum and tremendous possibilities for the citizens of the town. We thank the Alabama Department of Transportation for their support and partnership on this project.”
Drivers should anticipate lane closures and reduced speed limits during construction. ALDOT urges drivers to plan accordingly for delays and stay mindful of people and equipment in the work zone.
CB&A Construction, LLC of Birmingham was awarded the $4.9 million contract for the project as the lowest bidder meeting all requirements. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2026.
This project is a joint effort between ALDOT and the Town of Pike Road.
